Wanfang Data Corporation Sponsors AAS-in-Asia 2020

Message from Wanfang Data Corporation (International) Ltd

As a branch company of Wanfang Data set up in Hong Kong, we felt so sad to see the conference being moved from Hong Kong to Kobe due to the political turmoil in our hometown, and ultimately postponed and changed to an online conference due to the coronavirus pandemic. Previously we used to meet people in the conference rooms and discuss various issues of what happened in Asia, such as the “One Belt One Road” Policy of China, the growth of democracies in southern Asia, the exchange of Asian cultures in the globalized world. From now on, all these issues may have become less important, and we may shift our attention to some other issues for the future.

To seize the future, we need to grasp the history. To grasp the whole picture of the history, we may start from digging the history of a village, a town, a city or a country. Our proprietary database of China Local Gazetteers contains thousands of titles of local gazetteers from the Sung dynasty to modern China, either written in classical or modern Chinese, which is a primary resource to realize the cultural, political and social changes of China from a local point of view. Besides historical records, our pioneering platform of Wanfang Video brings online streaming videos more accessible into the research materials. We feature TV lectures in Chinese from Phoenix Television in Hong Kong, award-winning TV miniseries, movies and documentaries in Chinese from Public Television Service in Taiwan. Some of the documentaries covers various topics of Asia such as jade mining in Burma, immigrant workers in Southern Asia, dubbed or subtitled in English.

Last of all, this is an unprecedented time. I wish the best of the conference and all participants enjoy the exchange of views freely without borders and boundaries.
